Congratulations, you just got a new job and are going to receive your first paycheck in the near future.

But wait!!!! You look online on investing your salary and the wealth of information often ends up confusing you.

This is a brief and concise guide on how to get started on building wealth through investing your salary, every month in a disciplined way. If you are looking for any new tricks or shortcuts, unfortunately, I have none of those.

What I can offer you, are a few steps, I followed myself when I started out investing from my first salary. The good thing is they have worked for me and I believe they will for you too.

Note: – Before we start make sure you have your basics in line. These include having a decent emergency fund worth 4-6 months of your expenses, your own (not the one offered where you work) health insurance policy.

1) Start with mutual funds, especially index funds

Mutual funds provide an easy, simple, and effective way to start investing your money.

My first foray into investing was through index funds as well. I recommend this because index funds have very low expenses when invested through them, track an underlying index such as NIFTY 50 containing good quality large-cap stocks and passive funds tend to outperform actively managed funds over the long term.

Starting a monthly SIP into an index fund and continuing through with it will help you to build sizeable wealth. Additionally increasing your SIP by say 15-20% percent annually has shown very good results as well.

Pro tip: Make sure you choose the direct plan when investing, direct plans will have lower expenses than regular plans of the same mutual fund scheme, this is due to the distribution commissions involved in regular plans.

This can be done through either opening a Demat account or through apps such as ET money, groww, etc.

The above graph shows the fund, HDFC index fund NIFTY 50- direct plan growth.

The fund has delivered 14.9% since its inception while having an expense ratio of just 0.3 %.

This means if you started a ₹1000 SIP in 2016 it would be worth about ₹90,000 today. All this while paying very little expenses on your investment.

2) Investing in individual stocks

As for picking stocks, it took me a good 5-6 months before I even started doing this. If you are someone who goes in search of stock tips from WhatsApp groups I would advise you to stick to mutual funds as you might not be ready for this yet.

My advice to anyone starting out READ, READ, READ.

Before you start investing in individual stocks read their annual reports, investor presentations, management commentary, and conference calls to get an idea about how the company and its management are functioning.

A good way to go about this would be to do stock SIP’s on your chosen stocks so that they can be accumulated every month.

Usually, the company’s own website is a good place to start.

3) National Pension Scheme

NPS is a great way to start saving for retirement.

Opting for a 75:25 split between equity and debt in an NPS scheme is a good way to go about it.

On retirement, after 60 years of age, you are required to keep at least 40% of the corpus and buy an annuity, which provides you with a monthly income.

The rest of the 60% corpus is tax-free to withdraw. (NPS has tier 1 and tier 2 accounts, you can withdraw anytime from tier 2 accounts)

Opening an NPS account can be easily done through a bank.

NPS is also tax efficient,

Under section 80C – Up to ₹ 1,50,000

Under section 80CCD(1B)- Up to ₹ 50,000

Under section 80CCD (2) – 10% of basic + DA/ 14% of basic+ DA (Not applicable for self-employed)

Example= Salary 5,00,000 and Dearness allowance 1,00,000= 6,00,000

10% of 6,00,000= 60,000 can be claimed as well.

It takes a lot of time to build up decent capital. By making sure you start investing from your first paycheck, you can increase the odds in your favor.
